Hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) scattering is a rich and complex QCD process and a key input in the Standard Model computation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. For an accurate determination of the latter it is necessary to understand HLbL scattering for a wide range of energies. In this talk I will present an analysis of HLbL scattering and the muon $g-2$ within holographic models of QCD, which are able to capture important UV constraints from perturbative QCD and agree very well with data driven dispersive approaches at low energy. I will highlight in particular the role of axial vector and tensor mesons and their excited towers in the fulfilment of short distance constraints and show that holographic tensor mesons are able to resolve the current tension between lattice and dispersive results.
