Abstract:

Symmetries play an important role in particle physics. They are central for the theoretical description of the electromagnetic, weak and strong interaction and they are pathbreaking for finding extensions of the Standard Model like for example supersymmetry. In the talk the underlying principles and applications of symmetries in particle physics will be discussed. In particular discrete and continuous symmetries as well as space-time and inner symmetries will be addressed.
