Abstract:

Certain nonlinear hyperbolic models arising in continuum physics and, especially, models describing complex fluid flows do not take the standard form of conservation laws but, instead, are nonlinear hyperbolic systems in nonconservative form. This nonconservative form poses challenges for solutions involving shocks. The design and the properties of difference schemes suitable for the numerical approximation of nonconservative systems in particular is very challenging. We shall give an overview on progress we have made to this end.
