From NIST back to Würzburg: JMU Mobility Fellowship Expands Quantum Photonics Expertise
15.07.2025Ph.D. student Yorick Reum has returned from a JMU Mobility Fellowship at NIST in the USA – bringing new skills in quantum photonics back to Würzburg.
Our Ph.D. student Yorick Reum returned from a three-month research stay at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, supported by the JMU Mobility Fellowship.
Hosted by Dr. Marcelo Davanco, Yorick gained in-depth knowledge of a new calibration protocol for the localization of quantum emitters and practical experience in cryogenic fiber-coupled measurements. He also explored advanced simulation techniques for optimizing photonic devices, further strengthening his expertise across simulation, fabrication, and characterization of quantum photonic devices.
We extend special thanks to Marcelo and the entire NIST group for the inspiring and ongoing scientific exchange, as well as the hands-on training during his stay.
The JMU Mobility Fellowship enables early career researchers to spend 1 up to 3 months at a research institution abroad. “The fellowship not only expanded my personal skills but also gave lasting momentum to our work in integrated quantum photonics here in Würzburg,” says Yorick.
Since his return, Yorick has already applied these skills at the Chair of Technical Physics, supervising master and bachelor students, contributing to publications, and helping establish new laboratory setups.
