Neutron and resonant x-ray spectroscopy in correlated materials

In our group we investigate complex, functional materials such as transition metal oxides, which are used in the emerging field of correlated nanoelectronics. Unlike with conventional semiconductors, exotic superconducting, orbital and magnetic states can be realized at the interfaces in layered structures comprising such materials. Examples include the LaAlO3 - SrTiO3 interface, at which both superconductivity and magnetism are observed, and at which electronically active structures can be “written” and “erased”, as well as LaCoO3, which undergoes various interface modifications and magnetizations upon strained growth on substrates with different lattice constants.

We investigate such structures both experimentally using neutron and resonant x-ray scattering, and with computer simulations, and the exchange of ideas with theoreticians is an integral part of our work. We closely collaborate with groups in Würzburg and with colleagues at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, the Canadian Light Source, the BESSY synchrotron in Berlin and the MPI-Stuttgart.

Master thesis topics are available. We offer opportunities for research visits in the institutions mentioned above and are committed to supervision.
