The Department of Astronomy is involved in the operation of the MAGIC and FACT gamma-ray telescopes and is a member of the LST and CTAO consortia (Image: Department of Astronomy)

In the field of radio astronomy, the department operates the LOFAR station DE602 (Unterweilenbach near Garching) in collaboration with ECAP and MPA (Image: ASTRON).

We are a member of the German Long Wavelength Consortium (GLOW) and are actively involved in the further development of the International LOFAR Telescope in Europe and the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. Within GLOW, these efforts are coordinated through the D-LOFAR and D-MeerKAT consortia.
Through the VDR, we are actively involved in the Square Kilometre Array Observatory. Our particular focus is on further developing the SKA-mid in South Africa to enable networked operations with radio telescopes in Germany, Europe, and around the world: SKA-VLBI.
