3D Jet Modelling

Modelling the 3D structure of relativistic jets

Relativistic jets are among the most fascinating objects in the universe. The are launched from rotating black holes and propagate as collimated flows with nearly the speed of light. During their propagation jets are subjects to several Instabilities disturbing their collimation. However, jets are stable over thousands of light years. This raises the questions which physical mechanisms stabilise jets? In this project we will use 3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the role of the magnetic field in the collimation of relativistic jets.
