Group trip to Pottenstein
25.08.2025On August 13th, our annual field excursion took place. This year, we met at the Elisabeth Fountain in Pottenstein, located in Franconian Switzerland. We hiked a 10-kilometer route, passing through several beautiful locations, starting at Pottenstein Castle, which was built between 1057 and 1059 by Boto, the Count of Pottenstein.
Next, we explored the "Devil’s Cave," a massive flowstone cave, where we joined a guided tour through its various halls, including the "Devil’s Hole," the "Barbarossa Dome," and the "Colossal Hall." We then passed by Schöngrundsee, a lake created in 1943 within a valley.
The exhausting hike ended with a pleasant picnic and some fun laps on the summer sled track. In the afternoon, we enjoyed a delightful dinner at a local restaurant before heading back to Würzburg after a wonderful day.
