Farinacci Group

Welcome to the Farinacci group!

„Many properties of quantum materials are shaped by the fine details of atomic-scale interactions, and this is exactly what we want to investigate! Using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we probe and manipulate individual atoms, molecules and nanostructures on metals, thin insulators and superconducting surfaces. We further combine STM and AFM with state-of-the-art techniques such as electron spin resonance (ESR), pump-probe and stochastic resonance spectroscopy (SRS), allowing us to investigate the coherent and incoherent dynamics of these quantum systems and gain fascinating insights into fundamental phenomena.

„Our research group is part of the chair of Experimental Physics II and we are grateful for the fruitful collaboration between our STM groups. We are furthermore members of Cluster of Excellence ctd.qmat  – Complexity, Topology and Dynamics in Quantum Matter – at the University of Würzburg and Technische Universität Dresden, which explores and develops novel quantum materials with tailored properties. Finally, we remain connected to Stuttgart, where our research started as a junior research group funded by Qphoton, and where we continue a fruitful collaboration with Dr. Jake McGuire as a part of the Quantum Technology Baden-Württemberg (QTBW) network, funded by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation.

Edna-Carter professorship

„The research group is named after the American physicist Edna Carter. She was the first woman to become a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy in Würzburg, earning her PhD in 1906 under the supervision of Wilhelm Wien, who later won the Nobel Prize in 1911. Carter made major contributions to the study of X-rays, work that helped lay the foundations for Max von Laue's Nobel Prize-winning discovery of X-ray diffraction. The Edna-Carter Professorship was newly established in her honor, to support outstanding women in STEM, and we are grateful to be its first holder.
