1K

The 1K-STM is currently the high-end instrument available at our research group.  By pumping on the liquid helium it allows for sample temperatures as low as 1.3 Kelvin.  Furthermore, it features a superconducting solenoid magnet which can generate fields up to 12.5 T.  The four-chamber ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems offers a wide variety of surface preparation (electron-beam heating, argon ion sputtering) and analysis methods (low-energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy). To protect the microscope from external mechanical vibrations the STM chamber rests on three air-suspended damping legs

The 1K system is used for scientific investgations on topological insulators and studies of nanomagnetic surfaces.
