From Applied Physics to Industry: Alumni Share Career Insights
02.10.2025On Thursday, October 2, the Chair of Applied Physics hosted the industry workshop “From Applied Physics to Industry”, an afternoon dedicated to exploring career paths beyond academia. Four alumni of our chair, Dr. Johannes Koeth, Dr. Georg Knebl, Dr. Tristan Harder, and Johannes Beierlein, returned to Würzburg to share their professional experiences and insights.
The workshop highlighted the broad range of opportunities that a background in applied physics can open from high-tech companies in semiconductor optics and laser development to consulting and precision metrology. The speakers discussed how scientific training and problem-solving skills translate into diverse industrial contexts, and how their experience bridges the gap between research and industrial application. Their talks offered valuable perspectives on the transition from academic research to industry, as well as on the skills and mindset that support long-term career development.
Lively discussions followed, continuing in an informal setting during a joint barbecue, offering participants a great opportunity to network, exchange experiences, and reconnect with our alumni.
