Gradient effects on false vacuum decay (in gauge theory)


Using Green's functions in the background of Euclidean solitons, decay rates of metastable vacua in field theory can be computed including gradient effects. This way, artifacts such as imaginary parts of the tunneling action or gauge dependent decay rates are consistently eliminated. As applications, we consider a Coleman-Weinberg model of radiative symmetry breaking, phi^4 theory as a simplified version of the Standard Model Higgs field and transitions for a gauged scalar field. The expansion in orders of derivatives gives some systematic insight about the importance of gradients for scalar, Yukawa and gauge interactions.
