Towards Efficient Matching and Merging with the Vincia Sector Shower

Abstract

While systematic and statistical uncertainties in collider experiments continue to decrease, uncertainties stemming from theoretical modelling become more and more dominant, hindering the full exploitation of the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Parton shower Monte Carlos are among the most widely used theoretical tools in collider physics and core part of any multi-purpose Monte Carlo event generator. Despite their vital importance for the modelling of logarithmically enhanced radiation, these algorithms employ a series of approximations yielding only a very limited accuracy in the description of highly-complex collider events. Although the situation may be improved upon by the systematic combination with multi-jet matrix elements, typically, the complexity of such merging algorithms render these highly inefficient for events with many particles.

In this talk, I will present a parton shower algorithm designed for the efficient combination with fixed-order multi-jet matrix elements and the inclusion of higher-order perturbative corrections in the shower algorithm itself. I will review the key ideas behind the so-called sector shower and present results highlighting the drastically improved efficiency in merging at high multiplicities. To round off, I will discuss prospects to improve the formal precision of the sector shower.
