From the rainbow to X-rays

On the 11th of July, the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy invited the public to our campus for the Physics Day, celebrating the 125th anniversary of Wilhelm Röntgen’s Nobel prize. Many research groups presented fascinating scientific demonstrations and explained their work, with a special focus on inspiring children to explore science.

Our group offered a workshop based on Adriana’s previous activities for Girls’ Day and Tag der Maus. We demonstrated several experiments with light, for example, how to guide light around a corner using a jet of water. Moreover, we organized a hands-on craft activity in which children built a simple optical illusion. We also explained how rainbows are formed and introduced the visitors to Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays in Würzburg.
