Merging different materials into a single sample may lead to mutual interactions that
drastically alter the resulting physical properties. The atomically thin materials are especially
responsive to such treatment because of the negligible internal volume and large surface exposed to
environment. In this talk, I’ll show how the pairs of well-known materials acquire new biomimetic
[1] and optoelectronic [2] properties while being in close proximity to each other. In particular, I’ll
focus on the two very different examples: (i) functionalized graphene layers immersed into an
aqueous solution [3] and (ii) two-dimensional semiconductors placed on a perovskite substrate [4].
